Assess and treat patients who suffer from psychiatric illness and participate in enhancing psychiatric care delivery in a multidisciplinary, 12-step based treatment environment. Educate staff on best practices in the management of co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders. Propose, develop, and implement best practices in psychiatric care delivery under the direction of the Medical Director. Propose, develop, and implement improvements in the process of psychiatric care delivery under the direction of the Medical Director. Work collaboratively with other physicians and staff to ensure the best possible psychiatric treatment for our patients.

Key result areas

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Assess and diagnose mental disorders in individuals referred in order to treat specified mental disorders and provide consultation services to professional staff.
  2. Conduct assessment interviews based on referral questions and input from referring mental health professionals.
  3. Formulate clinical reports that include specific categories and content regarding: history of current illness, psychiatric history, family background, medical history, social status, mental status exam, multi-axial diagnostic impressions, and treatment recommendations.
  4. Reassess presenting and treatment-emergent symptoms and progress
  5. Generate diagnoses based on the most recently available DSM criteria.
  6. Work collaboratively with biomedical staff in the management of acute and chronic medical illnesses and substance withdrawal.
  7. Use best practices to differentiate mental disorders from biomedical conditions and complications that present psychological symptoms.
  8. Provide input regarding treatment alternatives and recommendations for continuing care.
  9. Prescribe psychiatric hospitalizations for individuals deemed to be at imminent risk for harm to self or others, acutely psychotic, extremely agitated, and/or manic.
  10. Provide on-call phone coverage.
  11. Where possible, use intoxicant-free approaches to illness management. Adhere to our policies regarding the prescribing of intoxicants to addicted individuals.

  1. Provide psychiatric medical expertise in the assessment and treatment of mental disorders to ensure that biological aspects of mental disorder are addressed.
  2. Prescribe psychopharmacological treatment as indicated for specified mental disorders.
  3. Prescribe within formulary guidelines, and adhere to our policy when that is not indicated.
  4. Minimize or resolve psychopharmacologic complications via systematic assessment and reassessment of medication response based on the patient’s self-report, input from other disciplines, and objective data.
  5. Adhere to our clinical guidelines and practices regarding medication prescribing practice in the treatment of mental disorders.
  6. Discontinue psychotropic medications that are no longer indicated. (e.g. medications that were prescribed during periods of continuous and extensive intoxication, medications that are of questionable clinical benefit, intoxicants that are relatively contraindicated in addicted individuals, etcetera).
  7. Maintain an effective, professional relationship with the mental health clinic.

  1. Educate patients, customers, peers and other staff regarding mental health issues.
  2. Educate patients regarding mental health diagnoses; medication use; side effects, etcetera. Educate patients about co-occurring disorders.
  3. Participate in case reviews by giving input that addresses diagnostic and clinical management questions.
  4. Provide suggestions, advice, and recommendations pertaining to CD/MH issues, policies, and procedures to Medical Director.
  5. Comply with all documentation standards.
  6. Provide emergency back up in crisis situations as requested.
  7. Assist in facilitating psychiatric hospitalization when required.
  8. Educate staff as appropriate so that best practices in the treatment of co-occurring disorders are implemented.
  9. Provide consultation and input on campus and national teams as requested by Medical Director.

  2. Provide on-call coverage phone for continuation of psychotropic medications and emergency mental health concerns.
  3. Participate as a team member in mental health team case reviews.
  4. Meet and maintain productivity for the position.
  5. Identify individual and systemic barriers to productivity and suggest improvements to the Medical Director.

  1. Actively participate in the development of a physician services team and increase the involvement of physician services, and in particular, psychiatry in multidisciplinary care delivery
  2. Communicate directly with peers (biomedical physicians and psychiatrists) regularly to ensure optimal, collaborative patient care and ongoing process improvements in medical/psychiatric care delivery.
  3. Champion multidisciplinary approaches to treatment and participate directly in multidisciplinary teams whenever possible.
  4. Communicate directly with other disciplines to ensure optimal collaborative care delivery.
  5. Assertively work toward the development of a strong, healthy, functioning physician services team.
  6. Actively participate in physician services weekly team meeting and complete deliverables for the team as directed.

  1. Assure a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, guests, and visitors to include;
  2. Maintain privacy, security, and confidentiality for all patients, past and present, based on federal and state regulations and our policies.
  3. Apply and adhere to standards and regulations for fire, weather, emergency, and environmental hazards
  4. Work safely using procedures and techniques that apply to work area and equipment including ergonomics.
  5. Daily, assure that doors, windows, files are closed and/or locked, based on department standards and expectations.
  6. Report safety/security incidents or near misses to the appropriate staff. Complete an incident report for any injury, theft, vandalism, security concern or potential hazard in immediate work area as well as anywhere on our property, including parking lots and trails.
  7. Assure all electronic and written client information is secured in a double locked area.
  8. Ensure all patient related information is transported in a secure manner, e.g., locked container, land phones.
  9. Authenticate records in a timely manner in accordance with our policy.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional education, training, licensure, experience, etc.

Prior CD/Detox experience; 1 yr. experience in acute care setting

Minimum 2 yrs. experience in addiction medicine practice

Minimum education, training, licensure, experience, etc.

Doctorate (MD)

Current license to practice medicine in appropriate state

Board certified, certified in addiction medicine or board eligible in a medical specialty. If board eligible, must be board certified or certified in addiction medicine prior to the re-credentialing in two years.

Addiction related medical practice or equivalent/related experience

Minimum of 2 years freedom from chemical use problems (CA only)

DEA Certificate

DEA DATA waiver to prescribe buprenorphine (within 30 days of hire)

Current and active CPR Card
